Memorial Biography

Jeffrey "Jeff" Mattson, 65, of Rockford, IL rejoined the love of his life on Wednesday, March 18, 2020. He was born July 5th, the son of Howard and Marilyn (Sietsema) Mattson. Jeff was a man of faith -- in God as well as in people. He was a musician, a poet, and a philosopher, who expressed himself humbly, but demonstrated skill and dedication in everything he did. He believed that if something was worth doing, it was worth doing with integrity. He was respected in his community, valued in his church, and beloved by his family. Music was one of his great passions. He served in a leadership role in the DuPage Symphony Orchestra, where he played the trombone, and he incorporated music in all of the numerous programs he led through his church. He liked to say "every time the horn is in your face, it's doing you good". He was always happiest when working with his hands. "If you see something that needs doing, do it," he would say. There was always a new fix-job in his basement, a project in his garden, or a set to paint for his church's weekly kids program. When his own kids were small, there were bike tires to patch, swing-sets to build, and wooden swords to carve for them in his workshop. Jeff was dedicated to his family. He was intentionally present for his children, reading nightly bedtime stories, helping with school projects, leading Scout trips, attending every concert, play and sport event; they never had to wonder whether he would "show up". Jacqueline Mattson, his wife of 42 years was the inspiration for his song, the muse for his art, and the one love of his life. His children celebrate their reunion, after a brief, but still too long absence. He is survived by his four children Stephen Mattson, Peter Mattson, Emily (Gordon) Lin and Daniel Mattson; grandchildren Kaja, Teddy and Torby; siblings Mark (Ruth) Mattson, Curt (Kathy) Mattson, and Jenni (Jim) Friedmeyer. In lieu of flowers, please make donations in Jeff's honor to the DuPage Symphony Orchestra. The family would like to thank the staff at Swedish American Regional Cancer Center and CPMC Van Ness for their care and compassion. Memorial will be held at Morning Star Church in Rockford, IL, date TBD
